About quartersawn oak
Sawmills quarter the log first and then saw each board from the resulting quarter. This quarter-sawing results in straighter- and more regular-grain boards and add an extremely unique twist as well.
The unique thing about oak is the presence of medullary rays. These water-carrying channels radiate outward from the center of the log-like spokes in a waterwheel.
When these rays intersect the growth rings, boards paralleling them show silvery rays ranging from flecks to flashes. This is widely regarded as an elegant and beautiful option.
